Crunching the numbers

Dog Sure offers coverage without an overall annual limit, except for the Pet Care Wellness benefit, which is limited to R1 250 per year with a 15% excess. Any registered veterinarian can be used, and there are no breed loadings or exclusions unless a pet is showing signs of a pre-existing condition. 

The standard excess is either R400 or 15% of the claimed amount, with certain procedures attracting a 25% excess. Multiple pet discounts are available, and premiums can be reduced by increasing the minimum excess from R400 to R1 000. 

For pets over the age of 8 or if you wish to limit what you pay for insurance, there’s an accident-only option with annual limits of R10 000 or R20 000. Pre-existing and related conditions are not covered under the accident-only option. 

Expected monthly premium 

Covering your pets with Dog Sure offers you age-related monthly premiums. With the standard excess, you’ll pay R450 for dogs younger than 4 years and R499 for dogs older than 4 years.

Cats older than 4 years will cost you R329 and cats older than 4 years will cost R344. If your pet is older than 6 years you’ll pay R626 for a dog and R344 for a cat.

On the Premium Saver excess plan, you’ll pay R405 for a dog and R296 for a cat younger than 4 years per month.

A dog older than 4 years will cost R449 and R310 for a cat in the same age group. If your dog is older than 6 years you can expect to pay R563 monthly and R310 per month for a cat of the same age.

If you choose to cover your pets for accident only you’ll pay R80 per month for R10 000 cover and R155 per month for R20 000 cover. The cover amount is the same for both cats and dogs.

Dog Sure offers you great benefits

Multiple pet discounts are offered, with the higher premium applied to the dog. A Pet Care Wellness benefit is limited to R1 250 per annum, calculated on a pro-rata basis, and can be used for things like deworming, dental scale and polish, vaccinations, chronic medication, and homeopathic treatments. The policy also offers a voluntary additional excess discount.
