From humble beginnings

MediPet was founded in 2007 by veterinarian nurse Louise Griffiths who saw the need for affordable and accessible pet insurance in South Africa.

Since then, the company has grown into one of the country's leading providers of pet insurance, with a focus on high-quality customer service and comprehensive coverage options.

Spoilt for choice with MediPet

With MediPet you can choose between four coverage plans. These plans are divided into an accident-only plan which covers your pet in the event of accidents, such as fractures or poisonings, and a basic plan which includes cover for accidents and illnesses, such as infections or digestive problems.

They also offer a comprehensive plan which offers coverage, for accidents, illnesses, and routine care, such as check-ups, vaccinations, and dental cleaning, and a routine care plan which is an optional add-on covering the cost of preventative treatments, such as tick and flea control, as well as routine check-ups and vaccinations.

At MediPet, customer service is a top priority. The company offers a helpline for emergency support and advice, as well as a quick and easy online claims process. You can also track the progress of your claims online, making it easy to stay informed about the status of your pet's care.

Waiting periods and non-covered items

It's important to note that MediPet insurance policies have a waiting period of 14 days before coverage begins, which means that any illnesses or injuries that occur within the first two weeks of your policy won't be covered.

MediPet reserves the right to deny coverage if they determine that a pre-existing condition exists, so it's important to disclose any relevant medical history when applying for coverage.

Choose the plan that suits your needs best

The Lite plan offered by MediPet provides basic coverage for pets at a cost of R321 per month. It has an annual maximum coverage of R40 000 per policy year and covers up to four claims per year, with a maximum of R13 760 per claim.

The plan includes a 30-day waiting period for routine care and an excess of 15% or a minimum of R250 per claim.

The plan does not cover holistic wellness, supplements, dental care, and other treatments, but Benefit Booster can be added to provide extra coverage. Premium Saver is another optional add-on that allows you to save 7.5%-15% on monthly premiums and claims.

The MediPet Essential plan provides comprehensive cover for accidents, illnesses, emergencies, and holistic wellness for cats and dogs. The plan offers an annual maximum of up to R55 000 per policy year, with monthly premiums starting from R348 for cats and R422 for dogs.

There are no sub-limits and allows an unlimited number of claims per year. However, there are waiting periods for some treatments, and an excess fee applies to all claims.

They offer additional benefits, such as holistic wellness, supplements, behavioural therapy, missing pet advertising, emergency boarding fees, and theft cover. It does not cover pre-existing conditions, dental care, or cremation.

The Essential plan has age restrictions for dogs and cats, with dogs over 9 years of age being offered Lite or Accident plans instead.

When it’s comprehensive cover you need

The Ultimate360° plan offered by MediPet is a comprehensive insurance plan that covers accidents, illness, emergencies, and holistic wellness. The plan provides peace of mind for expensive surgeries and doesn't have sub-limits.

There’s an annual maximum of up to R65 000 per policy year and starts from R567 per month for dogs and R415 per month for cats. There’s a 30-day no-claim period from the date of joining, followed by a 30-day 50% shared co-payment period.

Waiting periods apply to some benefits, including prescription food, dental care, sterilisation, and certain treatments, ranging from 4 months to 6 months.

The benefits you'll have with comprehensive cover

You’ll enjoy benefits such as holistic wellness, supplements, behavioural therapy, missing pet advertising, emergency boarding fees, theft cover, cremation contribution, radiation and chemotherapy, dental care, and sterilisation.

Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Optional add-ons include routine care packages, Benefit Booster, Premium Saver, and Chronic care support. The joining ages for Ultimate360° are for dogs between 8 and 9 years old, and for cats 9 years and over. Dogs over 9 years of age are offered Lite or Accident plans, not Ultimate360°.
