Metropolitan Services

Metropolitan offers critical illness cover as a solution to help you cope with the financial impact of surviving a critical illness.

FutureChoice Critical Illness Cover offers two options:

Critical Illness Cover (core) which pays a lump sum if you're diagnosed with one of the four major critical illnesses - stroke, cancer, heart attack and coronary artery bypass surgery, and Critical Illness Cover (comprehensive) which pays a lump sum if you're diagnosed with one of the four major critical illnesses plus 12 other critical illnesses. You can also add Critical Illness Cover to FutureChoice Life Cover (all causes).

Flexi-premiums allow you to adjust your premiums and cover to a more affordable level during financial difficulties, while escalation options provide the option to increase your benefit amount to keep up with inflation.

Optional benefits include disability premium waiver, retrenchment premium waiver, death premium waiver, cashback benefit, and monthly support payout benefit.

Critical illness cover starts at R150,000 and goes up to a maximum of R1.5 million, with premiums as low as R100 per month.

With one in three men and one in four women likely to have a heart condition before the age of 60, and the rising incidence of critical illnesses, it's important to have the right protection in place for you and your family.

A summary of Metropolitan’s critical illness cover options

Metropolitan offers critical illness plans that aim to assist individuals diagnosed with a serious illness to adapt to their new lifestyle changes. The coverage is available to those aged between 14 and 64 years and ranges from R150 000 up to R1 500 000.

By conducting medical tests, the insurer can provide the best possible payment to start with, provided that the individual is healthy. The Flexi-Premiums benefit allows policyholders to decrease their payment and coverage when times are tough.

Critical Illness plans come in two options:

Core and comprehensive, with the latter covering four major illnesses and 12 others.

The benefits include a value defender to keep up with the rising cost of living, the free January benefit allowing the policyholder to skip their January payment every year, the disability premium waiver, which covers payments if the policyholder becomes disabled, and the retrenchment premium waivers, which takes care of payments for 12 months if the payer is retrenched.

The death premium waiver ensures that the plan continues if the payer passes away. Lastly, the cash-back bonus reimburses some of the payments made every five years.
